Year 5 Learning Overview
We have a rich and engaging curriculum, which challenges, stretches and supports our fantastic 21st century learners. Throughout the school year, we will be adding information and pictures relating to our whole school theme; we hope you enjoy this. Ask your child about the things we upload, they should have a strong understanding of what they did and, perhaps more importantly, why they did it. As always, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call in to see us or write a note in the home-school diary. We want this page to be a great resource for parents and carers to get involved in their children’s every day school life, as well as being a source of information and a learning resource for children to access at home.
As Effective Communicators…
As effective communicators, we will be improving our knowledge of vocabulary through reading and exploring texts and books. We will be looking at how to hook the reader in using a variety of tricks and devices, how to create tensions and suspense and how to structure our writing. We will be focusing on peer assessing and editing our work carefully, to begin to understand that our first draft isn’t the finished article. This will be done through short bursts of writing, using a variety of stimulus. In addition, we will be revisiting basic skills, including grammar, spelling and dictionary and thesaurus work.
As Members of the Digital Age…
As members of the digital age, we will be exploring e-safety. We will be looking at using technology safely, respectfully and responsibly, exploring acceptable and unacceptable behaviour. We will also be using technology to support our learning creating interactive images and refining our skills when selecting and retrieving information from the internet.
As Historians…
We will begin to develop a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of world history, in particular the exploration of the North Pole. We will look at connections, contrasts and trends, with other periods of history, including modern day.
As Sporting Heroes…
We will be developing our football and hockey skills. We will also be working on our fitness levels and 5N will be going swimming.
As Active Citizens…
We will be looking at what makes a good leader and what makes a good follower. In addition, we will discuss what it means to have good mental health and how we can care for others and ourselves.
As Mathematicians…
As effective mathematicians, we will be covering the following areas: coordinates and how points can be translates on grid, statistics, problems involving all 4 operations and the properties of numbers.
We will also be focusing on developing fluency, problem solving and reasoning within these areas as well as developing our number skills. We will continue to develop our instant recall of times tables and apply them to range of contexts. .
As Linguists…
We will continue to learn French. This term we will learn new vocabulary and develop our ability to understand new words and phrases.
As Artists and Designers…
We will be looking at traditional Inuit art, including sculptures and artefacts. We will be researching this history behind them and creating our own, using a range of mediums.
As Scientists…
We will continue to learn French. This term we will learn new vocabulary and develop our ability to understand new words and phrases.
As scientists, we will be identifying how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution. I will also be able to recognise that living things have changed over time and that fossils provide information about living things that inhabited the Earth millions of years ago
Later on this term, we will explore classification based on common observable characteristics in micro-organisms, plants and animals.
As Geographers…
Year 5 and 6 will be stepping into Matthew Henson’s, the first American to reach the North Pole. They will be exploring life at sea, learning how to navigate around the world, taking an expedition to The Arctic Circle to locate the North Pole and learning how to adapt and thrive in freezing temperatures.
We will be able to locate places on a world map, use atlases to discover geographical features and use digital maps to research factual information about a particular location.
