Geography and History at Norbury Hall
At Norbury Hall, we teach a unique and bespoke curriculum where history and geography are entwined to create an immersive experience for the children. We call this ‘quest,’ and through our quest, the children take on different roles from significant people and follow a narrative story to enable them to learn new knowledge and skills. Children see and learn the links between history and geography and their involvement through a narrative quest allows them a real purpose when learning.
Learning through quest begins during EYFS and continues in Key Stage 1 and 2. Children spend a term focusing on history and geography where they face problems, challenges and tasks.
Geography
At Norbury Hall our geography curriculum is immersive, stimulating and hands-on that inspires and encourages children’s curiosity and fascination about the world around us and the people that we share our world with. As geographers, the children experience geographical knowledge, understanding and skill of our world at a local, national and global level by going on an exciting journey and taking on a role. This enables them to explore and investigate the world around them. Children explore their home, Stockport, at a deeper, more meaningful level, by developing key skills: interpreting maps, through fieldwork and by investigating physical and human geographical feature in their locality and in the wider world. This allows our children to explain how the Earth’s features are shaped, interconnected and changes which have happened over time.
Our outdoor learning environment enables children to explore their local world in which they live, undergoing fieldwork and exploring the natural environment in our luscious Meadow to the Big Woods. Enquiry based learning and questioning children are encouraged, in order to lead their learning. Children work together to solve problems, follow clues, answer questions, experiment, explore and discover using key skills to find out more. Planning and teaching equips pupils with the knowledge of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
History
At Norbury Hall, we believe History, forms an integral part of the creative curriculum. We believe the study of history inspires children’s curiosity, encourages them to ask critical questions and enables them to have a better understanding of the society in which they live and that of the wider world. The children work as historians within their overriding quest where they will be led by enquiry questions and key concepts such as continuity and change, cause and effect and significance. As historians, the children will critically analyse different sources of information, ask relevant questions to deepen their understanding whilst drawing on previous knowledge and have the opportunity to enrich their experiences through well-chosen class trips or visitors. We believe that studying history also helps children gain a sense of their own identity within a social, political, cultural and economic background.
In Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 children will develop an awareness of the past. They will learn about significant individuals who have contributed to national and international achievements. Children will also learn about significant historical events. They will also study changes within living memory both by looking at local changes - focus on our school as well as looking at the area of Hazel Grove and Stockport. Their learning will be placed within a chronological framework and the children will be introduced to the historical concepts such as cause and consequence, change and significance and these will be built upon as the children continue their journey as historians through school. In Key Stage 2 children will continue to appreciate history in a chronological context and to build upon the concepts introduced in KS1. They will develop a secure understanding of British, local and world history.
