At Norbury Hall Primary School, all Key Stage 2 children begin to learn a foreign language as required by the National Curriculum. French is taught throughout Key Stage 2, with the aim of inspiring the children to discover the enjoyment of learning a foreign language, as well as laying the foundations for further language learning at Key Stage 3. Our MFL provision aims to create excitement, curiosity and inclusivity by providing the building blocks and transferable skills to learn a language. It also aims to develop an awareness and appreciation for other languages and cultures in and outside of school whilst also understanding the usefulness of languages in society.
Children are introduced to French in the EYFS through basic classroom routines. This enables the children to develop early language acquisition skills that facilitate their understanding of the patterns of language and how these are similar to, or differ from English.
In KS2, French is taught to each class during a weekly timetabled lesson. Lessons throughout KS2 support the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, whilst in addition learning about cultures. Children are taught skills to enable them to listen attentively and respond by joining in with rhymes, games and songs. We emphasise the speaking and listening skills over the reading and writing skills.
Our teaching and learning of French encourages children to be inquisitive, with opportunities to explore a whole new view of the world and its cultures. The knowledge and skills which are taught, extend our understanding of how language works and similarities and differences between languages. Learning is sequenced, builds on prior knowledge and is relevant to our children, their heritage and the area in which they live. Our MFL curriculum allows children to thrive by providing a medium for cross-curricular links and for reinforcement of knowledge, skills and understanding developed in other subjects.
The National curriculum
'Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world...'
The National Curriculum for Modern Foreign Languages (MFL), aims to ensure that children at KS2 make ‘substantial progress’ in one language and aims to ensure that all pupils:

The National Curriculum for Modern Foreign Languages (MFL), aims to ensure that children at KS2 make ‘substantial progress’ in one language and aims to ensure that all pupils:
- understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
- speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
- can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
- discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
