Book Fortnight has been a great success in school. The children enjoyed the usual excitement of dressing up as their favourite book character and we had some amazing entries for the competition. The reading den, Charlie Bucket’s house leading into the chocolate factory, allowed classes to come together in a cosy and calm environment for them to share a class read. The den always supports the overall theme for book fortnight and encourages a great deal of discussion around the chosen focus story which this year was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Read dating allows the children the opportunity to share books that they have enjoyed with their peers and learn about new books that may appeal to them. The children also enjoyed texts exploring the themes of hunger and the use of food banks. These texts allowed the children to develop their skills of empathy – putting themselves in the shoes of others. There was also great excitement around preparing food related to the themes in the books they were reading such as creating fruit lollipops, soups and pasta dishes. Key skills for food preparation were learnt and the children certainly loved the end products! The children also learnt about the importance of food composting and how we can then use the compost in the summer term to support our outdoor learning projects. The launch of Stockport Book Awards has now created a buzz around reading and the children are already discussing this year’s texts and bringing in art pieces that they have created in response to their reading. We look forward to this continuing over the coming weeks.
Thanks to all the parents and carers who support Book Fortnight by providing costumes, support home learning competitions and spend time reading with your children on a regular basis – it does all really help to ensure our children develop a love of reading. The Year 2 children thoroughly enjoyed celebrating the Holi festival on Friday afternoon.
What is Holi? Holi is the festival of colours. It is a fun Indian festival that marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring. Holi is about happiness and togetherness. It marks the victory of good over evil. Throughout the story of Holi, there was a bad king named Hiranyakashipu. His son Prahlad was a good boy and loved Lord Vishnu. The king’s sister Holika tried to harm Prahlad, but she got burnt instead. The night before Holi, a fire is lit to remember the story of Holika. The next day colours are thrown onto each other! Special coloured powders called gulaal are used for this and there is lots of dancing and singing. Sweet and savoury foods are also enjoyed such as gujiyas and chaats. Dear Parents and Carers, We have been really enjoying our learning all about our current Quest over the last few weeks. Last week and this week we have looked further into the ‘When do I?’ aspect of our Quest. We have taken our learning to look at the history of transport. In Reception we are:

Dear Parents, During this half term and the first part of the summer term, we will be delivering Relationship and Sex Education for Years 1 - 6. These lessons will take place as part of our PSHE curriculum. If you would like to view the Relationship and Sex Education materials that we will be using, then you would be more than welcome to request this. Please could you contact your child’s class teacher to do this. We feel that it is important the children take part in these sessions as part of our on-going programme of personal and social and health education. I would like to emphasise that all themes covered are taught in an age-appropriate way. Key themes explored within certain year groups are as follows:
If you would like to discuss anything further please do not hesitate to talk with your child’s class teacher, Mrs Adnett, Miss Garrett or Miss Wood. If you do not wish your child to take part in these sessions, then please can you let Miss Wood know in writing that this is your decision. We will of course make alternative provision for your child during this time.
Yours sincerely Becky Wood Good morning, Please find attached information for the Year 2 team about an upcoming trip to The Lowry Art Gallery. Please click on the following link https://forms.gle/Lv3v4Q3TPqheSR9L6 to give permission for your child to attend. Kind regards, Norbury Hall Primary School Dear Parents and Carers,
Year 2 visit to The Lowry Art Gallery As part of our summer Quest, linked to music and arts, we are planning to take the children to The Lowry Art Gallery. Children will complete a workshop about the basics of painting through use of a variety of tools to explore with a professional artist, including colour mixing, the colour wheel and tone. We will also take a visit to the gallery to look at L.S Lowrys painting style. The visit will take place on Wednesday 21th May 2025 We are asking the children to wear their school uniform, a waterproof coat and comfortable footwear for the visit The children will require a packed lunch for the day and also a bottle of water to drink throughout the day. In order to minimise rubbish, we would appreciate it if the children brought as few plastic items in their packed lunches as possible. We ask that your child brings their packed lunch in a rucksack as they will be carrying it with them during the visit. If your child currently has school dinners, they can be provided with a grab a bag lunch if you so wish. We will travel to The Lowry by coach, leaving school at 8:45 am and returnirky at approximately 2:45pm. Please can we request that children arrive at school by 8:30am in order to be registered and ready to leave school promptly at 8:45am. A parental voluntary contribution of £14.50 is requested to cover the travel cost and guided session by Monday 5th May. This can be paid online via school money. We think the children will benefit from this experience and will thoroughly enjoy the day. We will require a small number of parental help on this occasion. Please let us know via your child's reading record if you are able to offer your support and we will contact you if your help is required. Only a small number of additional adults are required. Thank you in advance. The Year 2 Team Dear Parents,
The school councillors would like me to remind you about our upcoming fundraising event next Wednesday 19th March. Pupils have been asked to remain in their school uniform, but wear odd shoes for the day. We are asking for a voluntary contribution of £1 and an item of food to donate to our chosen charity-Stockport Food Bank. All money raised will be split between Stockport Food Bank and Make a Wish. The office have set up online payment via school money. The councillors would like to thank everyone in advance for your support. Many Thanks, Mrs Cooney and School Council Dear Parents,
Friday 14th March is the Hindu festival of Holi. To celebrate we will be using some coloured powders. If you would like your child to take part they will need to bring a change of t-shirt that they don't mind colouring. Thanks, The Year 2 team |
