Welcome back! We hope you have had a fun festive break and have also managed to get some rest! A huge thank you to the parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles and family pets who helped to walk with us to Hazel Grove Baptist Church and Norbury Church during the last few weeks of the autumn term. We really appreciate your support and couldn’t make these visits happen without your help. Are You Ready to Travel The World? We had a great start to the academic year last term and saw the children thrive building their scientific knowledge. This term our whole school Quest focus will be linked to our history and geography objectives. On the first day back we held a whole school assembly to introduce the new quest – Are You Ready to Travel The World? We were presented with different items of luggage containing clues as to our chosen destinations. In Year 3, the children will be travelling from Salford to Los Angeles! They will be travelling across the United States, Canada and Mexico to move between venues hosting this year’s FIFA World Cup. We will be comparing the human and physical features of Stockport to Los Angeles. We will also be exploring the human and physical features of some of the other 16 cities across North America which are hosting the matches. In Year 4, the children will begin their journey travelling to Berlin where they will be planning their own journey and will be helping an ancestor of a local soldier from Hazel Grove to learn more about their great grandad and the part he played in World War 2. The children will be comparing the human and physical features of Berlin and Manchester. OPAL Bingo The OPAL project is starting to take shape. The Working Party has met with our school mentor three times across this term. We plan to introduce new areas for play after the February half term holiday. Mrs Adnett and Miss Garrett have written to you to explain some next steps including a bingo style collection event after Christmas and a working party day where we would appreciate parental help to help us get organised for our February launch. The working party team day is Friday 23rd January, where we would appreciate any volunteers to offer help to come into school to build and prepare items for the project. The date for any donated items to be brought into school is Wednesday 28th January. Thank you again for your continued support. P.E Kits
Please can we make sure that the children are appropriately dressed for outdoor P.E lessons, especially during the colder months as these lessons may take place on the playground or on the field. In Year 3 this term, the children will have golf, handball and basketball lessons across the term. Year 3’s P.E days are on Monday and Tuesday. In Year 4 this term, the children will have dodgeball and netball lessons across the term. Year 4’s P.E days are on Monday and Wednesday. Both year groups will also have O.A.A sessions (Outdoor Adventurous Activities) where they learn team-building and problem-solving skills. Year 3 will continue to get changed in school so will keep their kits in school to be worn as needed. These will be sent home between half terms but also when needed to be washed. Please can P.E kits be clearly labelled with your child’s name. Year 4 will continue to come to school in their P.E kits. Home Learning New home learning grids will be given out the first week back and the children will continue to receive weekly spelling lists. Thank you as always for your continued support, The Year 3 and 4 Team Welcome back! We hope you have had a fun festive break and have also managed to get some rest! Thank you so much for the lovely Christmas gifts, thoughtful cards, and warm wishes we all received. A huge thank you to all our helpers who helped us to walk with us to Hazel Grove Baptist Church and Norbury Church during the last few weeks of the Autumn Term. We really appreciate your support and these events couldn’t happen without your help. Are You Ready to Travel The World? Last year, we had a great start to the academic year and saw the children thrive, whilst building their scientific knowledge. This term our whole school Quest focus will be linked to our history and geography objectives. On the first day back we held a whole school assembly to introduce the new quest – Are You Ready to Travel The World? We were presented with different items of luggage containing clues as to our chosen destinations and people. In Year 5, the children will start their career as travel agents by voyaging all the way to South America, specifically Manaus, a city in Brazil, which is right in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. We will be discovering key information about the River Amazon, the journey it takes and which countries it flows through as well as comparing this river with the largest river in Europe, the Volga and our local river, the River Mersey. We will be exploring similarities and differences between human and physical features in Manaus and Stockport as well as looking at the history of Stockport and how transport has evolved over time. In Year 6, the children will begin their journey in Africa, where they will be enlisted as a slave. We will then travel to travelling to the Caribbean to work on a cotton farm. After that, we will travel from the cotton farm to the UK to look at how the cotton was turned into thread and how children were used a labour; discussing the advantages and disadvantages of this. At this point we will visit Helmshore Mill in Lancashire to experience what life was like for children working in the mills and why the geography of the location helped the mill. Finally, we dive into the inspiring history of the Suffragettes, exploring their courageous "Deeds not Words" campaign and the pivotal role they played in securing the right to vote for women. This topic allows us to examine the struggle for equality, the difference between the peaceful Suffragists and the militant Suffragettes, and how these historic figures shaped the democratic society we live in today. In Year 5, Miss Manfredi’s class will start their swimming lessons on a Friday Morning, whilst the other class do Gymnastics. On Thursdays, both classes will do basketball outside. In Year 6, we are very fortunate to be working with Stockport County on Monday afternoons. On Fridays, both classes will do hockey outside. Home Learning New home learning grids will be given out the first week back and the children will continue to receive weekly maths activities. If there is something more specific you would like your child to work on at home, please get in touch with your child’s teacher and we can arrange this for you. Thank you as always for your continued support. Best wishes, The Year 5 and 6 Team Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome back to our Year 5 and 6 children to another fun-filled year! We hope you have all had a great summer break and are enjoying seeing your children settle into the new term. We have enjoyed getting to know the children and seeing their individual personalities shine. They have been working hard across the school to follow new routines and we have been very impressed with the children’s attitude towards their learning. What Makes Our World Work? This term there is a science focus right across school with the title of our new quest being ‘What Makes Our World Work? ’ We are stepping into the shoes of scientists to bring our learning to life, beginning to think scientifically and to question the world around us. Reading As always, reading is a very important part of learning at Norbury Hall. We encourage children to develop their reading skills and want to inspire their own reading for pleasure. Every classroom has a reading area for our children to enjoy and an adult in school will hear them read each week. To benefit your child, we are asking children to read at home at least three times a week and for this to be recorded in their reading records. This will be checked daily, during the school day. Each class also has an author box which allows them to explore a range of books from chosen authors. The author boxes will then be swapped between year groups after the half term break. Scooters and Bikes
As a school we encourage children to come to school on their bikes and scooters, but can we kindly ask they dismount their bike or scooter at the gate and then walk it into school. We do have a large bike shed in the junior playground which is available to use. Our school site is extremely busy in the mornings and at the end of the day and we want to keep everyone safe. Many thanks for your support with this. General Information With the cold weather creeping in, please can we request that children bring a coat with them each day. It would be useful, as with all items, that they are clearly labelled. Can we also request that children bring water to school, rather than juice for their classroom drink. Walking to and from school If you haven’t already done so, please can you email or write a note in the reading record to inform your child’s teacher if your child is walking home from school. As the children get older, some of them bring a mobile phone to school. These will need to be given in and locked away as soon as they are in school and they will be given back to them as they leave school (the same for smart watches). Children are not permitted to have their phones out whilst on the school site and they should not use their cameras at any times, in line with out safeguarding policy. Many thanks for your support with this. Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome back to our Year 3 and 4 children to another fun-filled year! Every child in the school also has an individual login for Times Tables Rock Stars. This is a brilliant way for our children to secure their times tables in fun way. Your child’s class teacher will set specific times tables personalised to their ability and they will be allocated time at school to practise, however we know that any additional time spent using TTRS at home has a huge impact on securing a quick recall of division and multiplication facts. Alongside reading, we are also asking that children play TTRS at least 3 times a week. We have been continuing to work hard moving into our last half term of the school year-
oh my! Throughout the school we have been acting, singing, dancing, making, sculpting, drawing and painting! We have lots of upcoming events so please find more details below and some reminders of future dates. Wrongsemble Theatre Performance Wednesday 2nd July Following last year’s successful visit from Wrongsemble Theatre Company, we are delighted to welcome them back to school. We feel it is important that the children enjoy a live theatre performance in school each year. We request a donation of £2 per child towards this event. This will be set up as a payment for you on School Money. Parents’ Association Summer Festival Friday 4th July A reminder that our Summer Festival will take place on Friday 4th July from 4.30pm – 6:30 pm. We hope to see as many families as possible at this event. In order to prepare for this there will be two non-uniform days in exchange for a donation for the fair. On Friday 27th June we would like a donation for the teddy and book tombolas. On the day of the fair itself (4th July) please could children in Nursery, Reception, Year and Year 2 bring a donation of chocolate or sweets and children in Years 3 – 6 bring a bottle for the bottle tombola. Norbury Fest Wednesday 9th July We are also working hard to rehearse performances ready to share with our friends and families in our whole school Norbury Fest celebrations! Performances will be repeated so that families with more than one child in school can be accommodated. Performances will be at 1:30 pm, 2:00 pm and 2:30 pm. The exception to this is Nursery who will be doing one performance at 2:00 pm. We will then congregate together in front of the junior adventure playground at 2:50 to perform one last song as a whole school. Weather permitting we will hold the event in the school grounds. Further details will be made available before the time. The children have also been creating a range of products to sell to you as part of their enterprise project. This will be a cash only event, so please bring plenty of change with you. The children will then return to class and be dismissed as normal at the end of the day. We look forward to welcoming you to this event and we hope it is one that the whole family enjoy! Savoy Cinema Visits 10th and 11th of July The Parents’ Association have very kindly funded a visit for every child in school to the Savoy Cinema in Heaton Moor. Over the course of two days, all the children will be travelling by coach to the cinema, enjoying the film and then returning to school. All visits will take place in the school day and the children will be in school for their lunch. All costs for this visit will be funded by the PA. Visits will take place at the following times: Thursday 10th July – AM Years 3 and 4 Thursday 10th July – PM Years 5 and 6 Friday 11th July - AM Nursery and Reception Friday 11th July - PM Years 1 and 2 Children in Years 3 – 6 will be watching the BFG. This is a PG film so if you have any questions or objections to your child seeing this film, please contact their class teacher. On the Friday, our younger children will be watching the film Wish. A snack of popcorn and a bottle of water is included. Again, if you have any objections to this, please contact the class teacher. We do need parental permission for this visit – if you haven’t already then please complete the Google form at https://forms.gle/QW2HkvRW17e5n6WZ6 to give your consent to your child taking part. If you can offer your support on the day, please contact your child’s class teacher. Tapestry Friday 11th July As a school, we stop using Tapestry as a way of sharing with parents at the end of Year 1. Parents and carers of children moving from Year 1 to Year 2, will need to download any pictures, or work saved on their child’s profile, (should you wish to keep it) before it gets cleared. This will need to be completed by Friday 11th July, please. Thanks for your continued support as ever, Team Norbury We hope you’ve had a lovely Easter break and that you are enjoying the sunshine as we race along into the Summer Term!
In art across the school, we are exploring the work of famous artist Quentin Blake, to create our own work inspired by his unique and recognisable illustrations. Later on in the term, as sculptors, we will then dive into the world of pop art through the eyes of Claes Oldenberg and Peter Anton who both produce fun 3D forms of giant food items and as musicians we will be creating our own compositions inspired by the soundtrack from The BFG. Each year group will also have a different dance focus for the term. This year, both Year 3 and 4 will have the opportunity to work with our dance specialist Laura Kendall. At the end of the year, we hope to share our learning with you, to perform and to celebrate our successes at Norbury Fest. Here Comes The Sun! As the sun is finally shining again, please can you ensure that your child is prepared and safe to enjoy the warmer weather. The children will need a hat to protect them from the sun – please ensure that this is labelled. They may also want to have a pair of sunglasses and their own sun lotion. This can be reapplied by the children at break or lunchtime. Teacher Led Clubs Due to it being such a short term, clubs will continue on from last term. They will commence this week and run till Friday 16th May (the penultimate week of the half term). Upcoming dates for your diary
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back! We hope you all had an enjoyable and rest- ful break! Last half term, we worked incredibly hard across the curriculum! Our clever children have continued to work their socks off and we are so pleased with the work they have produced and the enthusiasm they are showing in their own learning. When do I? Where do I? The children have been working hard and have already pro- duced fantastic work. This term there is a history and ge- ography focus across school. With the title of our quest being ‘When do I? Where do I? We are stepping into the shoes of historians to make comparisons between the past and present and as geographers to explore our local and national areas. This term children have taken on the role of Junior Government Ministers! Year 3 have been exploring sports and leisure, learning about the impact football clubs, such as Stockport County, have on their local area. We have plotted routes on maps, created our own questionnaires to interpret data and used compass points and coordinates to locate places. We loved our trip to Edgeley Park and we have also visited the Na- tional Football Museum to learn more about pioneering figures, such as Lily Parr. We took part in a workshop, ex- plored the exhibitions and even got to take part in a penalty shoot out! In our workshop, we got to explore primary and secondary sources and we loved impressing the staff with our fantastic knowledge! At the beginning of the term, Year 4 stepped into the shoes of a Hazel Grove soldier, as they were enlisted into WW1! They have explored how and why the war started and have created their own timelines to retell the key events in their own words. They have compared maps of German territo- ries, before and after the war, and have used their historical and geographical understanding to keep evacuees safe, by suggesting the safest locations for them to stay. Year 4 are very much looking forward to their trip to the Stockport Air Raid Shelters in March, where they will explore the impact that the war had on those nationally and how evacuation impacted daily life. Reading As always, reading is a very important part of learning at Norbury Hall. We encourage children to develop their read- ing skills and want to inspire their own reading for pleas- ure. To benefit your child, we are asking children to read at home at least three times a week and for this to be recorded in their reading records. This will be checked daily, during the school day. Book Fortnight As we return to school, it is the start of our whole school Book Fortnight. We will start the fortnight with the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This year, our theme is food poverty and hunger. Each year group will look at a range of age appropriate books to help develop an understanding of the importance of eating a balanced diet to keep healthy, why food is important and how we can reuse and repurpose food items. Cooking Alongside our reading focus, each year group will be looking at an aspect of Design Technology, (cooking and nutrition). Year 3 and 4 will be identifying food groups, discussing what we need to make a healthy diet and exploring the ori- gins of our food. We will also be designing and making our own soup, using our slicing, cutting, chopping and grating skills. Each class will get the opportunity to design, prepare, make and taste make a dish which includes fruit or vegetables. Children will look at health and safety when cooking and use different skills when making their dishes. School will be providing the ingredients for these lessons. Please speak to your child’s class teacher if you have any concerns about allergies whilst cooking. Read dating For Read Dating we ask the children to bring in to school their favourite book from home, to share with their peers. The children will have the opportunity to share their book and discuss why and what it is they enjoy about their book. This could be a story, a non-fiction text, a cook book or even an atlas. Year 3 have enjoyed their session already! Reading den-As in previous years, our Library will be transformed into a magical reading den. All children across the school, will get the chance to reading in the den with their class, across the fortnight. This year’s den will be The Bucket’s house from Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. Once the children step inside, they will be transported to the inside of the chocolate factory. Please see the grid at the bottom of the Newsletter for key dates for Book Fortnight for Year 3 and 4. Home Learning Competition For home learning, we would like to ask the children to create their own book character from a repurposed or unused healthy fruit or vegetable. Also, we would like the children to write a label for their book character, telling us who their character is and also display their name and class on it. Once the competition is over, the fruit and vegetables will be put into our school composter, which wil then in turn be used to grow more fruit and vegetables in school. Entries need to in school on Monday 3rd March. Please see Mrs Adnett's newsletter for ideas. Dear Parents and Carers,
