Intent
At Norbury Hall, we provide an engaging, strenuous, challenging and diverse physical education for all of our learners, following the latest National Curriculum guidelines. We seek to nurture confident, resilient children, who will strive for their personal best. We listen to our children’s wants and needs and provide them with a range of active experiences and clubs. This enables children to obtain the values and skills required to celebrate and respect the success of others, as well as modestly celebrating their own successes.

We have developed a curriculum, which shows progression and diversity. From the early years, where children will learn fundamental gross and fine motor skills, through to year 6, where children will use skills obtained during their time at Norbury Hall to take part in activities such as cricket, golf and handball. We teach children life skills that will positively impact on their future and we believe that physical education is at the centre of that. Additionally, we look to signpost children to activities and clubs outside of school when they show a particular skill or desire to take part in that sporting activity.

We strive to provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in ways which supports their health and fitness whilst promoting healthy eating through the introduction of healthy snacks at break times, and a diverse and varied menu for all children. We aim to educate all children about living a healthy life by providing lessons that are detailed, interactive and evidence-based about how to keep their body healthy.

Our overriding aim is to develop pupil’s physical literacy whilst enhancing their enjoyment and knowledge of physical education. We offer learning opportunities where children need to cooperate and collaborate with their peers, understand fairness and equality and instil these as embedded life-long values.

Implement
Pupils at Norbury Hall participate in twice-weekly high-quality PE and sporting activities. We use a variety of teaching and learning styles in PE lessons, which we do through a mixture of whole class teaching and individual or group activities. We celebrate the achievements our children make by drawing attention to good examples set by individual / groups of children, enabling a collaborative learning environment.

We welcome and celebrate out of school achievements also and these are recognised weekly in the celebration assembly as children are invited to share in their successes with the school. We encourage children to evaluate and reflect on their skills where appropriate, providing opportunities in lessons to do so, along with delivering opportunities for the children to collaborate and compete with each other. Teachers provide differentiated, suitable learning opportunities for all children, matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the individual. At Norbury, we provide opportunities for all children to engage in a variety of PE related extra-curricular activities after school and during their lunch times. The school also competes in a variety of different competitions against other schools. We are signed up to the school sports partnership SHAPES who organise events and we ensure that there is a range of different year groups taking part in a variety of sports across the year.
During most school holidays, the school holds sports clubs which provide families with child care where can attend and take part in sporting activities during the day. The daily mile gives children the opportunity to run or walk for an extended period to develop their resilience and general fitness in a highly collaborative and social setting. This gives children an enthusiasm for sport without the pressure of competition.

We ensure that physical education lessons accommodate content from other areas of the curriculum where appropriate. PE provides numerous opportunities for pupils to apply literacy and numeracy whilst being active. Each year group works towards the development and achievement of key objectives; these objectives have been developed in line with the National Curriculum which is incorporated into our scheme of work (GetSet4PE), developed by our PE coordinators.

Impact
The impact of PE at Norbury Hall can be determined through class observations and teacher assessment as well as through
self-reflection and peer critique. This is then reported to parents in the end of year report. Through our alliance with SHAPES, pupils who need extra support or motivation are targeted to attend events designed to inspire. Children reflect on their weekly PE sessions and create their own targets. Assessment data is used to inform and enhance our planning as we look forward to the next half term or year group. We also have the added data recorded from the children’s swimming lessons that help inform us as to whether or not we need to plan extra support for non-swimmers or not.

This document will also show their progress and indicate which swimming level they have achieved. Children will gain the social skills to work as a team and also self-critique their own performance whilst using the correct vocabulary. Children will experience winning and losing and how to behave in each situation, which will develop their knowledge of their own emotions also in KS2, they have the opportunity to experience new sports through extra-curricular activities provided by a mixture of teachers and expert coaches.

Physical Education at Norbury Hall Primary School
At Norbury Hall Primary School, Physical Education (PE) plays a crucial role in the development of children, helping them grow not only physically but also emotionally and socially. PE isn’t just about keeping fit; it’s about fostering important life skills, boosting self-confidence, and encouraging teamwork. The PE curriculum is designed to be both challenging and fun, offering children the opportunity to try new sports, refine their skills, and learn how to work together with others.

The PE program at Norbury Hall is carefully planned, ensuring that every child gets a varied and engaging experience throughout their time at school. The curriculum is built around high-quality, well-delivered lessons that introduce children to both familiar and new sports. This approach helps children develop a range of physical skills, from fundamental movement and balance in the early years to more complex techniques as they progress through the school.
Picture
In the early years and Key Stage 1, the focus is on fundamental movement skills. Children are introduced to basic concepts like balance, coordination, and agility. These foundational skills are crucial for all sports and physical activities they’ll encounter later on. As children move into Key Stage 2, these basic skills are built upon and developed further, providing them with a strong base to excel in a wide variety of sports.

The curriculum covers a broad range of both traditional and more unusual sports. Well-known activities like football, netball, cricket, and tennis are sports commonly played in the community. However, the school also offers children the opportunity to try out more unique sports that they might not have encountered before. Handball, tri-golf, yoga, and orienteering are all part of the PE experience at Norbury Hall. These activities offer children fresh challenges and encourage them to step outside their comfort zones.

One of the highlights of the PE program is the opportunity for children to represent the school in inter-school competitions. Regular participation in these events helps to build a sense of pride and teamwork, while also giving children a chance to test their skills against others in a competitive and supportive environment. These competitions give children the motivation to push themselves and see the results of their hard work.

PE at Norbury Hall is not just about learning physical skills but also about building important character traits. Children are encouraged to be curious and brave enough to try new activities, taking responsibility for their own learning. They are also taught to show respect to their teammates, opponents, and referees, whether in victory or defeat. The emphasis is on kindness, good sportsmanship, and personal responsibility, which are values that the school holds dear. Additionally, Norbury Hall offers after-school clubs delivered by qualified, sport-specific coaches. These clubs provide extra opportunities for children to further develop their skills in particular sports and enjoy more focused, hands-on learning outside of regular school hours. Whether it's learning to play tennis with a coach or practising football techniques in a small group, these clubs support the development of each child’s interests and talents.

In summary, PE at Norbury Hall is designed to be an exciting, dynamic part of the school experience. The curriculum is varied and progressive and ensures that all children have the chance to explore new sports, develop important physical skills and learn valuable life lessons along the way. The school's aim is not just to make children better at sports, but to help them become more confident, responsible, and kind individuals both inside and outside the classroom. This gives them a model of how to live a healthy and happy life.
