At Norbury Hall we truly see PSHE/RSE as a key component of how our children thrive and grow during their time with us. We strive to help them meet their potential whilst becoming well rounded and caring young people ready to move onto the next stage in their education.

Intent
- PSHE is all inclusive and delivered in an age-appropriate manner to support students in their learning as they move through school. Students are signposted at the end of sessions where appropriate and the term ‘trusted adult’ is introduced and explained from a young age. This is reinforced throughout school. PSHE is an ever-growing curriculum new resources are continually added to the base curriculum which is 1Decision. 1Decision runs from nursery through to year 6. Additional resources continue to supplement this including our school ethos, our use of chimes and 5 mindful breaths, how we meet and greet the children each day, assemblies and class circles. NSPCC, Dove, PSHE association, Real Love Rocks, Crucial Crew and many more resources also supplement this curriculum throughout school as appropriate to the needs of the children.
- PSHE revisits themes and builds on previous knowledge as the children move through school. Pathways are developed and children work on these pathways year on year in a spiral manner.
- Teachers are sensitive towards the needs of students from disadvantaged backgrounds and tailor their questions to reflect this and support the children as necessary.
- PSHE is differentiated to ensure that it is accessible to SEND students. Teachers review the content of lessons prior to teaching so that it matches student needs. Where necessary students can cover work from earlier year groups if this is appropriate.
- Staff take part in annual safeguarding training.
Implementation
- The PSHE co-ordinator (Karen Matthews) updates staff of national changes and the updates received from both 1Decision and the PSHE Association so that good practice and ideas are shared.
- Mindfulness is a whole school approach and is utilised from nursery right through to year 6. All classes have sets of Tibetan chimes and these are used consistently across school for the children to listen to, be still and complete mindful breaths. Circles are another tool which are used from nursery right through to year 6 encouraging good turn taking and developing listening skills. Circles take place each Monday morning and every Friday as part of dedicated weekly PSHE/RSE teaching slots across the whole school.
- PSHE is a spiral based subject where pathways are revisited year on year helping to build key subject content as the children grow and mature. PSHE is always delivered in an age-appropriate manner to meet the needs of individual children ensuring that it is an accessible subject for all children.
- Baseline assessments take place at the beginning of units/pathways and used to plan age-appropriate lessons based on prior learning and knowledge of the children.
- 1Decision is the main resource used to deliver PSHE and is supplemented with additional resources at various points in the year as needed/appropriate and as they become available. It is an ever-growing list of resources including some of the following (and others throughout the year) NSPCC, Anti-bullying Allegiance, Real Love Rocks, restorative approaches, Crucial Crew, daily meet and greet, transition, additional one-off resources as sent out by 1Decision to cover events in the news.
- PSHE is a spiral based curriculum – new floor books will show these pathways in a clear way of how the subject develops as the children grow and learn.
- Reading is a key skill and as the children become more proficient with this, they are able to read from the 1Decision slides themselves, for younger children this is read and discussed with them to ensure understanding.
Impact
- In PSHE, baseline assessments are completed prior to units being delivered so that work is planned, amended and delivered in an age-appropriate manner. Baseline assessments are revisited at the end of units to identify new learning.
- PSHE is now recorded in class floor books which will be used and added to on a weekly basis as the children move through school. The books will demonstrate an overview of learning taking place in classes and make be in the form of photographs, pupil voice and on-going assessments. In some older classes the children may want to work directly into these books.
- Children move appropriately around school, as a mindful mover (introduced June 2024) demonstrating a clear sense and understanding of school and class codes of conduct. Children can talk about these and the golden rules right from nursery through to year 6 in an age-appropriate manner.
- Circles and talking objects encourage speaking in front of an audience and class rules/code of conduct ensure that all students feel safe to contribute. Students are taught that they have equal rights (Equality Act 2010) and are encouraged to contribute from nursery throughout the whole school.
- PSHE by the very nature of the subject prepares students for their next stage of life in modern Britain, British Values are an important aspect here as are the 9 protected characteristics (Equality Act 2010).
- SMSC (spiritual, moral, social and cultural) is a key element of PSHE (& RE) and is covered weekly through circles, assemblies both key stage and whole school as well as daily in the classroom day to day running.
- Mindfulness clubs operate across school, Mrs Matthews has a mindfulness club each Wednesday 3:30-4pm in Autumn students from year 1 & 2, in Spring the club is open to year 3 & 4 and in Summer to the year 5 & 6 students. Children explore the notion of mindfulness in an age-appropriate manner and together they plan their sessions under the guidance of the teacher. Mrs Robinson runs a year 1 club called Norbury Explorers where the outdoors are explored in a mindful manner.
- Students enjoy PSHE lessons and the videos and characters from the 1Decision scheme of work help them to develop a wide range of age-appropriate learning.
- From a young age, children are taught about ‘trusted adults’ and are able to list who these adults might be and how they might be able to help them.
- As children grow older they become more familiar with other outside agencies who might also be able to help as well as NSPCC, ChildLine and the emergency services (Crucial Crew).
