Welcome to Reception
The Early Years provides the roots and foundations to a child’s knowledge and attitude towards their learning. It is therefore a crucial part of their educational journey. We believe that at Norbury Hall, we provide an engaging and safe environment for all the pupils in our care to grow and develop. We feel that it is essential to provide a learning environment that helps to shape the whole child and helps to develop their characteristics of learning.
In the Early Years we are aspirational for all our learners and endeavour for them to thrive, through our offer of a wide range of positive experiences that they enjoy. Children in Reception at Norbury Hall develop detailed knowledge and skills across the Early Year’s foundation stage. In the Early Years we passionately believe in shaping the whole child and providing the key foundations that will support and aid them through their life. We model equality and diversity through our everyday teaching and practice. We celebrate all that makes us different and unique also what makes us special.
We provide a fun and exciting environment linked to the Early Years curriculum. We are blessed with fantastic grounds here at Norbury Hall and use our outdoor classroom as much as the inside one.

A Typical Day at School
- The school day starts at 8:45am. The children then self-register.
- The children then go into a daily phonics session.
- We develop our fine motor skills throughout the day in Reception. Each day we do a daily ‘Dough Disco’ time. We also do a fine motor carousel called ‘Funky Fingers’.
- The children will then have ‘Discovery Time’. This happens at different points during the day and is a time when they explore the different areas within the classroom and in the outdoor area. The adults will be supporting the children with their learning in the different areas. Learning is shared through our online platform called Tapestry and through a learning journal which we produce that evidences progress throughout the year.
- Throughout the day there will also be structured, small group and whole class teaching sessions. These will have a specific focus e.g. phonics, maths, writing development, as well as many opportunities for Quest and thematic learning.
- The children have a morning break at 10:30am until 10:45am. This takes place on the Infant playground or the Infant field during this time we offer all children the opportunity to have a piece of fruit that is freshly delivered.
- The children have their lunch in the school hall at 12pm each day. They can either have a school lunch or bring a packed lunch from home. One of our amazing midday assistants is allocated to each Reception class and looks after them during this time.
- Learning is always happening here at Norbury Hall, in the classroom, in the school hall and out in the school grounds. The learning follows a Quest so that we can explore a topic in different areas of the learning space.
- We also read and listen to various different stories throughout the day. The end of the school day is at 3.15pm and children are collected from the playground outside the classrooms.
- We strive to keep you aware of what is happening on a weekly basis at school and what topics your child is learning about. We will do this online through a weekly newsletter and Tapestry. We also love hearing about your child’s experiences and achievements from outside of school.
